Fibre to the Cabinet (FTTC) - Superfast 40Mbps Broadband now available

FTTC is the first in a stable of fibre-based Next Generation Broadband products being rolled out in the UK to businesses and consumers. FTTC provides a much faster and richer broadband user experience, with the ability to run multiple applications simultaneously. BT has committed £2.5billion to rolling out fibre broadband reaching two thirds of UK users by 2015. FTTC delivers up to 40Mbps/10Mbps performance, with a new 80Mbps/20Mbps due for release this year. FTTC is highly cost effective and fast to deploy.

How FTTC works

The product utilises fibre optic networks to reach the street cabinet and is terminated from there into the premises by a traditional copper line. Broadband performance is therefore not impacted by the distance restrictions associated with running traditional ADSL broadband long distances from the local exchange. A special VDSL modem is utilised on premises to run the FTTC broadband signalling, into which a traditional router is used for firewalling and local network support, similar to a cable network environment.

Typical uses of FTTC include:

Network Backup - much faster uploads and downloads
VoIP - many voice channels via one connection
HD Video Conferencing - professional quality without the need for expensive equipment or networks
HD Security - video surveillance without the need for expensive set-up costs
Cloud Services - network-based computing, enabling session mobility with zero-configuration
Desktop Sharing - ‘see what I see’ experiences
